When you are on the border of one cell it registers that you are losing signal power, but simultaneously you gain signal strength from the cell you are approaching. As a result, you can be in the middle of a conversation and switch from cell to cell and you’d have no idea that anything is different. Indeed, most people don’t know that they’re in a “cell” in the first place.

Why Do We Not Have a National Cell Phone Directory?

There is a question that very few average Joes have raised in the last few years. The irony is that most if not all of these individuals are active users of the media vehicle upon which the question is posed. Understand something. The US has the second largest market of cell phones in the world. Yet there is no directory for the 276,610,580 contract holders.

Think about the amount of directory listings there are for white pages. If you Google it you happily tells your “Results 1 – 10 of about 188,000,000 for white pages”. The point is we have a number of national directories for landlines. Yet there are households now who actually opt out of having a hard line.

So we have 89% of the population with cell phones and no national standard directory. Weird. There has to be a reason right? Debatable. But like I said earlier, seems like no one is too worried about it. It’s not like they can’t do it. According to Wikipedia posts,

“[Cell phones] are regularly used by governments to perform surveillance… Mobile phones are also commonly used to collect location data. The geographical location of a mobile phone can be determined easily (whether it is being used or not), using a technique known multilateration to calculate the differences in time for a signal to travel from the cell phone to each of several cell towers near the owner of the phone.”

So the government can use them to listen to you. They can find out exactly where you are, but we can’t have an official national directory? It seems a little off to this author.
